7/5/2023 0 Comments Mead coming of age in samoa![]() ![]() The book has always been highly controversial, and the debates around it ideologically charged. ![]() It established Mead as a substantial figure in American Anthropology, a position she would maintain for the next fifty years. The use of cross-cultural comparison to highlight issues within Western society was highly influential, and contributed greatly to the heightened awareness of Anthropology and Ethnographic study in the USA. "She emphatically criticized the neurosis-inducing nuclear family, including the stress of Christian monogamy, and used her Samoan material to demonstrate an alternative to premarital chastity." (Hiram Caton, "The Mead/Freeman Controversy is Over: A Retrospect", Journal of Youth and Adolescence 29, 5 (Oct 2000)) The book also put forward the thesis that Samoan teenagers (with greater sexual permissiveness) suffered less psychological stress than American teenagers (with stricter sexual mores). In contrast, American youth are taught to compete against each other, leaving them isolated within their own cliques. As a result, their community is much more tightly knit than that of other cultures, and the individuals themselves are more emotionally secure. Mead's findings seemed to show that youth in Samoa are taught to grow together and strengthen the confidence of each other. Coming of Age in Samoa, first published in 1928, is a book by Margaret Mead based upon youth in Samoa and lightly relating to youth in America. ![]()

7/5/2023 0 Comments Book picnic at hanging rock![]() Its horror is built through evocative and atmospheric tension, building towards a release that is not guaranteed. ![]() Picnic at Hanging Rock leaves its reader with more questions than it answers. It is a relic of its moment in time where the colonial institution stands in stark contrast to, and is perhaps rejected by, the landscape it is forcing itself upon. ![]() Picnic at Hanging Rock fed the deepest held fears about the unknown of the Australian bush. Their manufactured sense of order is challenged by something unexplainable – this unease anchors Lindsay’s suspenseful narrative. Their disappearance, shrouded in mystery, rattles the college’s otherwise careful community. First published in 1967, the story is set on Valentine’s Day, 1900, when three schoolgirls and their teacher from nearby Appleyard College set out to explore the rock and are never seen again. Joan Lindsay’s Picnic at Hanging Rock birthed a mythology so entrenched in the Australian culture that it is now inextricable from the landmark itself. ![]() ![]() ![]() In Women & Power: A Manifesto, Mary Beard points out the simple yet devastating fact that “when it comes to silencing women, Western culture has had thousands of years of practice.” 1 Historical fiction has a strong tradition of attempting to redress this balance, imagining moments in history not as academic history has traditionally done (and sadly, often still does)-primarily through the lens of “dead white men”, kings and battles-but also via the lives and interests of the women who also experienced those far-off times.
